In 2018, I travelled with a small team to one of Indonesia’s largest shark fisheries with one intention, to befriend a shark fisherman and use his boat for tourism. The idea came to me after my many visits to the area to document the world famous shark fishing that occurs there. The fishermen are not large commercial businessmen, but artisanal locals, struggling to survive in a world where shark populations are declining. They are making an average of $150AUD for two weeks of shark fishing, yet the fins from the sharks they bring back are marked up extreme amounts to be exported overseas.
My project was successful, we befriended a shark fisherman who is the first of I hope many to become part of my team. He took us amazing places and although we were his first tourists, he wanted to know when we would be back. To him our presence meant an opportunity for an income free from the threat of prosecution for illegal fishing and weeks at sea away from his family. In no way have I stopped shark fishing in this area, or even the boats we use from fishing sharks in our absence, but we have begun to introduce an alternative income. With each trip we learn more and make progress on the effectiveness or distracting the boats from fishing sharks. We have successfully begun to show the fishermen how valuable a shark and a reef is alive, and begun a movement that will one day not be a choice, but in a world where sharks are disappearing, a necessity.
These trips are not just a way for you to see the shark fin trade first hand, but facilitate real change and be a part of a movement to save sharks with direct action, and at the same time engage in helping the community and the next generation. We will look for shark nurseries in the area, explore new sites, get comfortable on shark fishing boats. As well as visits to see the shark market where they fin and process sharks, you will see some of the most amazing and healthy reef. You will get to explore a part of the island barely witnessed by tourists, all from shark fishing boats. I will be with you each step of the way to help bring you into the project and make sure you get the most out of the trip.
Kuta Lombok will be our base, I always describe this place as Bali thirty years ago. An insanely beautiful location with beaches and restaurants. We will be staying at one of the most beautiful hotels (this is a luxury that contrasts the rest of the trip for sure, however its an essential accommodation for safety and efficiency with our local work). Then we travel together each day to the area where the shark fishermen live and return in the afternoon. The trip is about an hour long, a beautiful drive across Lombok.
Local airport: Lombok International Airport in Praya (just 20 minutes by taxi from where we stay, apx 15 AUD dollars in a taxt). You will be required to purchase your own flights to Lombok.

"I can not say enough about this trip. Madison's genuine passion for helping the sharks is evident in every part of what Project Hiu is about. The fact that you can join this trip and experience something like no other travel, knowing that it is supporting a practical solution, only intensifies the enjoyment. Her connection & respect with the culture and community is honest & it is clear that this is mutually felt. She has worked extremely hard to get to this stage & it was an absolute honor to be a part it. I will return and do this trip again without a doubt !"
"Enjoy warm weather, shark conservation and corny jokes? Madison's trips to Lombok bring an abundance of all three to the table! On a more serious note, this trip is life changing. You get to witness the early stages of an organic movement that is bringing about change not only to sharks, but to people in local communities. You will make lifelong friends, will want to stay longer, and will return home inspired. Best of all, the money spent is not going for profit, but for change. You will also get to see your dollars put to use immediately. This investment is worth every penny."
"The trip to Lombok with Madison Stewart for Project Hiu was life changing. Spending time with other like-minded people who want to do their part in saving the ocean was the best part. Getting to know the fishermen, seeing their village, and playing a part in introducing a new way of life to them was awe inspiring. They showed us the most beautiful, untouched spots in Lombok. We had many laughs together, and several tears of sadness and joy. It was the purest form of connection with humans and nature. The schedule was a perfect balance of adventure and holiday - not too many plans, and not too few. I wouldn’t change a single thing about the trip! There are many groups and conservationists out there who claim to be doing good with the money they are given, but Madison has very detailed plans of how to make the greatest impact with each dollar. Madison has carefully thought out every angle of stopping the shark fin trade, from the fishermen to the consumers, and I believe she will change the world!!"
"Sacrifice. That is truly what project hiu is all about. The sacrifice that the fishermen make each day to live, provide, and to overcome the odds they deal with in such a remote part of the world. It’s about our sacrifice too. Placing ourselves in a position where we hope to teach, provide, and help! In hopes to reach a better solution not only for the fishermen’s lifestyles, but for sharks and the environment in which they live in. Madison’s work is sacrifice. Being able to be apart of such an inspiring movement, will not only educate you! But it’ll allow the chance for you to share that experience with others. And that is the key solution here, isn’t it? To spread the word, to not HATE, but to UNDERSTAND. And once we understand, what we can do differently!
This trip is breathtakingly beautiful, heartbreaking, inspiring, and emotionally draining all in one. It is truly something everyone should be apart of."
"This trip to Lombok with Madi and her crew was a life changing experience, it is by FAR and will always BE the best choice I have ever made. Madi and her work of understanding how the fisherman work and creating the best alternative to help them in every way possible. The shark market hit me harder than anything else on that trip. Seeing the sharks, the boats, how they work, how they survive, how they grow there young. It was a very powerful experience that only a few get to feel and see. I highly recommend, and to be a part of something with meaning."
"Project Hiu was the best trip I’ve been on. I learnt so much about the shark finning trade, the fisherman and myself. Its a trip I still think about everyday the experiences you have are unforgettable and there is not a better person to run this trip then madi she’s an inspiration in herself."
"Project Hiu was an experience I will never forget. Incredible adventures, cherished memories and lifelong friendships. Project Hiu also gave me more insight on the true and misunderstood process of the shark industry. Getting to glimpse into the livelihoods of these fishermen gave me a better understanding of the real issue and allowed me to be apart of the solution. I am truly thankful for this trip and everything Madison is doing.”
